The phrase SEO is dead has been floating around since roughly 2012. To this day, some marketers still believe it and refuse to acknowledge its importance and existence.
First, what is SEO? Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of affecting the visibility of a website or a web page in a search engines “natural” or un-paid “organic” search results. In general, the earlier or higher ranked on the search results page, and more frequently a site appears in the search results list, the more visitors it will receive from the search engine’s users (Wikipedia).
Imagine it like this… You have a small business in a shopping centre. You have no visible signage, no name, no windows, nothing. Potential customers are not going to pay any attention or even consider your business as they can’t even see it! This is similar to what happens when businesses do not take SEO seriously, they are left in the shadows of the search list on Google.

Google receives over 63,000 searches per second on any given day. SEO is based on a few major concepts; link building, keywords and rankings. It may be argued that these tactics are ‘dead’, but they are still relevant if utilised properly. Link building is the process of acquiring hyperlinks from other websites to your own. It used to be enough to pack as many links as possible to your site anywhere and everywhere to boost your ranking. However, now quality over quantity matters far more as Google is penalising sites for spam and random irrelevant digital directories which will only decrease your ranking. Keywords used to be essential for driving traffic to your site from the search engine results page (SERP). Sites would awkwardly stuff headlines and opening paragraphs with keywords in hopes that it would boost their ranking. This may have worked previously, but Google’s algorithms are now more sophisticated and focus more on readability, user experience and solving user queries when determining a site’s ranking.

Google’s goal is to optimise relevant results for its users, it is key for Google’s survival. The days of SEO companies trying to cut corners are over. As many businesses realised over the past few years, Google can change the algorithm at any time and wipe the rankings from their search results. Therefore, it is essential to keep your sites organic and relevant for the audience you’re trying to reach. Although, the old methods of SEO may be dead, the new and improved tactics are very much alive and useful for businesses.
